Water Birth

Is a Water Birth Right for You?

Is a Water Birth Right for You?

For many mothers, laboring and giving birth in warm water offers a calm, gentle, and empowering birth experience. Water birth involves spending labor and sometimes the birth itself, in a specially designed birthing tub. The warm water helps promote relaxation, encourages freedom of movement, and may decrease the perception of pain, often reducing the need for medical pain relief.

One of the most common questions expectant parents ask is, "How does my baby breathe underwater?" The answer is reassuring: babies don't take their first breath until they are lifted into the air. While in the womb, babies receive oxygen through the placenta and umbilical cord, not through their lungs. Several protective reflexes, including the diving reflex, help prevent a healthy newborn from inhaling water during a properly managed water birth.

Water births are commonly offered at home births and many freestanding birth centers, and some hospitals now provide this option as well.

The best candidates are women with healthy, low-risk pregnancies carrying one baby in the head-down position at term. Certain medical conditions, preterm labor, heavy meconium, excessive bleeding, or concerns about the baby's well-being may make a water birth inadvisable.

If you're interested in a water birth, talk with your healthcare provider early in pregnancy to determine whether it's a safe option for you. With the right support and careful planning, water birth can be a beautiful way to welcome your baby into the world.

Here Are a Few of My Favorite Homebirth Midwives in the Tampa Bay & St. Pete Area

One of the questions I get asked most often is, “Do you know any great homebirth midwives in the Tampa Bay area?” While every family should do their own research and schedule consultations to find the right fit, there are a handful of midwives and practices that consistently stand out for their personalized care, experience, and commitment to physiological birth.

One of my top recommendations is Tampa Bay Midwifery. Their team provides comprehensive homebirth midwifery care throughout the Tampa Bay area, offering prenatal, birth, postpartum, and newborn care. They are known for taking time to build strong relationships with families and supporting informed decision-making throughout pregnancy and birth.

For families looking for deeply personalized care, Mary Catherine Hamelin Midwifery serves much of the greater Tampa Bay area and is known for her holistic approach to pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and newborn care.

I also love Being Born. Led by licensed midwife Glenda Datsko, this practice offers in-home prenatal, birth, and postpartum care and emphasizes accessibility and continuity throughout the childbearing journey.

Another wonderful option is Earthside Midwifery Care, which focuses on evidence-based, family-centered care for low-risk families planning a homebirth. Their philosophy blends the art of traditional midwifery with modern maternity care.

The best midwife for your family is the one who makes you feel heard, respected, informed, and safe. I always encourage expecting parents to schedule consultations with several providers, ask lots of questions, and choose the care team that feels most aligned with their values and birth goals. The Tampa Bay area is fortunate to have several incredible homebirth midwives dedicated to helping families experience empowered, supported births at home.
