Helping Your Breech Baby Turn Head Down

Gentle, Informed Support for Birth Preparation

If you’ve recently learned that your baby is in a breech position, take a deep breath—you are not alone, and you still have options. Around 3–4% of babies remain breech at term, but earlier in pregnancy many more are breech temporarily. In fact, the majority of babies will turn head-down on their own by 36–37 weeks. When they don’t, gentle, intentional movements can encourage your baby to settle into an optimal position for birth.

Why does this matter? Many maternal healthcare providers today are not trained in vaginal breech birth, or their hospital policies do not allow it. That’s why we focus on preparation and prevention, supporting the body and baby earlier, before fewer choices are offered.

Here are a few supportive steps you can take:

1. Practice the Spinning Babies® Forward-Leaning Inversion
This gentle inversion helps create space in the pelvis and balance uterine ligaments.
👉 Watch my Forward Leaning Inversion YouTube video where I guide you safely through this movement step-by-step.

2. Try the Ironing Board Technique
This classic positioning tool uses gravity to encourage your baby to tuck and turn.
• Have a partner spotting you and place an ironing board securely with one end on your couch and the other end on the floor (a non-slip surface like a yoga mat
• Make sure it is secured so it does not slide
• Lie upside down on the board with your head close to the floor and your legs on the upward slope of the board
• Relax your neck and breathe deeply for 5–10 minutes
• Always move slowly and come up carefully

I do like to remind parents that babies are wise. If there is an anatomical reason that they are not able to turn head down, they will not turn. I practices that I share blend gravity, stretching, and mindful breath work to bring your mind and body balance.

Wishing you a smooth pregnancy and childbirth.
