I'm sharing my FREE, downloadable birth preferences template to help you and your birth partner make informed and confident decisions during your labor and childbirth.

Why “Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby” Shouldn’t Be the Only Goal of Your Birth

We’ve all heard it: “As long as mom and baby are healthy, that’s all that matters.”

While the safety and well-being of both mother and baby are absolutely essential, they should never be the only goal of your labor and birth experience. Reducing birth to just a medical outcome overlooks something deeply important, your autonomy, your voice, and the emotional and psychological impact of how your baby enters the world.

Birth is a transformative life event. The way you are treated, the choices you’re able to make, and how respected and supported you feel can have a lasting effect on your confidence as a mother, your bond with your baby, and even your postpartum mental health. When women and their husbands/partners feel informed, heard, and empowered during birth, research shows they are more likely to experience greater satisfaction, lower rates of birth trauma, and improved bonding, even when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Being educated about your birth options and clearly communicating your preferences matters because:

  • It helps you advocate for yourself in moments when you may feel vulnerable or overwhelmed.

  • It encourages shared decision-making with your care team instead of defaulting to routine interventions.

  • It honors the fact that how you give birth can be just as meaningful as the final outcome.

  • It reduces fear and anxiety by replacing the unknown with knowledge and preparation.

A healthy mom and healthy baby are beautiful, non-negotiable priorities but they are not the complete picture. You also deserve a birth experience where you feel safe, respected, and empowered.

That’s why I created the Free Birth Preferences Template, a simple, thoughtful guide to help you reflect on what matters most to you during labor, delivery, and those sacred first hours with your baby.
