The First 40 Days

Nurturing Yourself in the Fourth Trimester

The fourth trimester, typically referring to the first 40 days after childbirth, is a crucial period for both your baby and YOU. While much emphasis is rightfully placed on caring for the newborn, it's equally important for Mamas to prioritize self-nurturing during this time. Here's why:

Physical Recovery

Pregnancy and childbirth take a significant toll on a woman's body. Giving birth is a major physiological event that can lead to various physical discomforts, ranging from soreness and exhaustion to more serious issues like perineal tears or Cesarean section recovery. Nurturing oneself during the fourth trimester involves prioritizing rest, proper nutrition, and gentle exercise to aid in the body's healing process.

Prioritize YOUR Mental Health: The postpartum period is often accompanied by a rollercoaster of emotions, including joy, anxiety, sadness, and overwhelm. Self-nurturing practices such as seeking emotional support from loved ones, practicing self-compassion, and engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation can help mothers navigate the emotional ups and downs of new motherhood. Postpartum Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC) can be great with helping you process this time and all of the emotions that accompany the 4th trimester. A counselor can also help you tell the difference between the Baby Blues and more serious postpartum mood disorders. For resources on how to find a counselor, visit Postpartum Support International.

Bonding with Baby: Nurturing oneself is not just about self-care; it's also about nurturing the bond between you and your baby. When a mother prioritizes her own well-being, she is better able to provide the love, attention, and care that her newborn needs for healthy development. Taking time for self-care allows mothers to recharge so they can be fully present and engaged with their babies. Self-care is more than pedicures and spa days. 4th-trimester self-care includes setting up a Meal Train, arranging pelvic health therapy, and prioritizing mental health support are a few ways you can find self-care after baby.
