Breastfeeding Moms, Do You Know the New Mastitis Protocol?
Safe and effective protocols for caring for mastitis infections during your breastfeeding journey.
Hi, I’m Jessica, a breastfeeding mother of 2 and a certified lactation counselor. I help women have more successful and empowered breastfeeding journeys.
Hopefully, you never have to deal with mastitis, but, if you do- I want to share the new protocol for caring for your breast.
First- call your healthcare provider for their medical advice. This article is not meant to be or replace the proper healthcare for treating mastitis.

If you’re dealing with mastitis right now, I want you to know this: you’re not failing, your body is not broken, and you’ve got this. The latest guidelines have shifted away from the old aggressive approaches and toward gentler, more effective ways to support your body’s healing. It’s called the BAIT Method, simple, practical steps you can start right now.
B – Breastfeed or Pump Normally
Keep feeding or pumping at your baby’s usual rhythm. There’s no need to over-pump or “power pump.” Doing too much can actually increase inflammation and make things feel worse. Trust your body and your baby, they know what they need.
A – Anti-inflammatories
Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) can be a game-changer for reducing both pain and inflammation. Always check with your doctor or midwife first, especially if you have any other health conditions, but when approved, it’s safe and very helpful while breastfeeding.
I – Ice/Cold Compresses
Swap the heating pads for ice or cold packs. Apply them for 10–15 minutes at a time. Cold therapy is incredibly effective at bringing down swelling and soothing that deep ache. Heat can feel good in the moment but often increases inflammation with mastitis.
T – Take it Easy
Rest is not a luxury right now, it is medicine. This is your permission slip to slow down, ask for help, and let the house get messy. Your body is working hard to heal. Prioritize sleep, hydration, and nourishing food as much as you can.
Letting Go of Outdated Advice
We used to hear things like “massage it harder,” “use hot showers constantly,” or “knuckle deep into the lump.” Those approaches can actually cause more harm by damaging delicate breast tissue and worsening swelling.
Here’s what is recommend instead:
• Use very gentle massage—think “petting a kitten”—only if it feels good. Light strokes moving toward your armpit can help encourage lymphatic drainage without causing trauma.
• Skip long, hot showers or constant heat. A quick warm shower before feeding is okay if it helps milk flow, but cold is your new best friend for healing.
Healing from mastitis takes a mix of patience, the right tools, and a lot of self-compassion. You’re doing an amazing job nourishing your baby even through this challenge.
If you’re struggling or the symptoms aren’t improving within 12–24 hours, please reach out to your doctor.

You’ve got this. One feed, one rest, one gentle step at a time :)
